As the day nears sunset, we all look forward to a relaxing evening.
Perhaps you like to have a shower or bath, grab a mug of hot chocolate, and change into a set of pajamas. Then, you get cozy in your bed, and watch a movie or read a few pages before calling it a night.
But wait — is your mattress living up to its expectations, or is it time for an upgrade?
We all deserve a great mattress that is comfortable, spacious and helps to keep us cool all through the night.
How do you choose the best mattress? What should you consider, and why?
Our comprehensive guides and reviews on mattresses and sleep are excellent in helping you decide.
Today, we’ll compare two mattresses: the Tuft and Needle Mattress, and the Casper Mattress.
Let’s discover the similarities and differences in their design — including what’s contained in their layers, their sizes, and which will work best for your sleeping position and lifestyle.
Casper vs Tuft & Needle Overview
Tuft and Needle
Tuft and Needle (T&N) is a company that creates its own high-density adaptive foam — a blend of polyfoam with graphite and ceramic gel beads.
Tuft and Needle have three types of mattresses:
- T&N Original mattresses
- Mint mattresses
- Hybrid mattresses
Did you know? Besides mattresses, they also have a range of bedding and bedroom furniture.
Casper
The Casper brand launched in 2014. Over the past seven years, it has expanded its products by adding four types of mattresses, three kinds of pillows, a range of bedding, bed frames, and bedside accessories.
The Casper Mattresses range includes:
- The Casper Original Mattress
- The Nova Hybrid Mattress
- The Casper Element Mattress
- The Wave Hybrid Mattress
Note: Both companies give you a 100-day trial period and a 10-year limited warranty for all mattresses.
Round 1: The Layers
Tuft & Needle Mattresses
The three brands of Tuft and Needle mattresses each have a different number of layers, made of adaptive foam with graphite and cooling gel.
The T&N Original mattress has two layers, the Mint has three, and the Hybrid has five — plus additional springs.
To keep you from overheating, the Original has standard cooling gel in its layers. In contrast, the Mint and Hybrid have ceramic cooling gel, with the latter including added carbon fiber to aid even more.
Casper Mattresses
Each Casper mattress has three layers.
The top layer has aerated foam for breathability, so you don’t worry about overheating. Plus, it’s resilient and bouncy.
The midsection is carefully zoned to support your body. It’s got soothing pressure points to reduce the discomfort that encourages tossing and turning — making it especially suitable for side sleepers.
At the bottom, all mattresses (except for the Hybrid) have a durable HD polyfoam that has pocketed coils. These help to distribute your body weight evenly, and that’s why people weighing 250lbs and above love Casper.
Round 2: Mattress Size and Sleeping Position
Now that we understand the layers’ designs, let’s look at how Casper and Tuft & Needle compare in terms of the mattress size and sleeping position.
We’ll see how each will work for you based on your height, weight, capacity, and the size of your bedroom.
Size
Both Casper and Tuft & Needle mattresses come in six sizes.
Always check the mattress tag or speak to an attendant when shopping at the store to confirm its size. Similarly, when making an online purchase, check your relevant product’s description.
Size | Tuft & Needle | Casper |
Twin | 39” x 75” | 38” x 75” |
Twin XL | 39” x 80 | 38” x 80” |
Full | 54” x 75” | 53” x 75” |
Queen | 60” x 80” | 60” x 80” |
King | 76” x 80” | 76” x 80” |
California King | 72” x 84” | 72” x 84” |
Although both mattresses are mostly similar, they’ve slight differences that are important to consider.
The Twin size from both companies is best for children transitioning into bigger beds and is great for bunk beds. Single sleepers living in a studio apartment will also find it suitable.
Note: If you’re 6’2 or taller, the Twin-size mattress will feel too tight for you.
However, the Twin XL, which is 5’’ longer, fits taller people more comfortably. It’s better for taller teenagers or adults who like to sleep alone.
Note: Since this mattress is small but has that extra length, it’s common in college dorm rooms.
The Full has an added 15’’ in width. Therefore, it has more room for two people.
Hint: It’s great for couples that like to cuddle!
Also, single sleepers — who’re 6’2 or shorter and prefer a lot of space — enjoy this mattress. It’s ideal for guest rooms or a standard one-bedroom apartment.
If you and your partner prefer to sprawl out, then the Queen size is for you. It’s big enough to fit in a master bedroom that is at least 100 square feet.
And, if you’re a family unit with small children or pets that love to sneak into your bed, try out the King. It comfortably accommodates two adults as well as children sleeping in a 120 square feet room.
Lastly, the California King comes with an additional 32 square feet. When you’re sharing this mattress with other sleepers, you’ll feel like you’re in your own bed!
What are the major differences between the two mattress brands?
Twin, Twin XL, and Full Tuft & Needle Mattresses have more square footage — each has an extra inch in width more than the Casper mattresses.
Sleeping Position: Side-Sleepers, Back-Sleepers, vs. Stomach-Sleepers
Whether you’re a back, side, or stomach sleeper, we know the right mattress that will work for you.
Tuft & Needle mattresses ensure your spine is neutrally aligned, from the shoulders down to the lower back. Hence, it’s perfect for back-sleepers.
So, if you’ve got back issues or know someone who does, this mattress will help relieve the discomfort by offering perfect alignment.
However, if you strictly sleep on your stomach, the Tuft & Needle mattress may not work for you. Your hips may sink out of alignment with your shoulders since the top layer is gentle and soft.
Perhaps you and your partner are opposites, or maybe you frequently toss and turn to change positions from your back to your side in your sleep.
If so, a Casper Mattress will work great for you. It has the perfect balance of pressure relief and support, and that’s why both back and side-sleepers find it accommodating.
Stomach sleepers can also find the Casper mattress more comfortable, but typically a firmer mattress that can raise the hips into position is a better fit for them.
Ready to Upgrade Your Mattress Today?
Whichever you choose, it boils down to your preference in terms of:
- Style
- The size of the bedroom
- The number of sleepers
- The sleeping positions
We recommend the Tuft & Needle mattress for anyone with back issues. It helps to give you a good night’s sleep without stressing your spine to cause more pain.
It has a 3-inch layer of T&N Adaptive Foam designed to distribute the pressure that builds up around the shoulders and hips. It “hugs” you, making you feel as if you’re in the mattress instead of on it.
However, if you’re sharing a bed with a spouse or someone with a different sleeping position than you, a Casper mattress is the perfect compromise.
Although it’s a better bargain than Tuft & Needle mattresses, a Casper mattress has got little motion transfer — one person can move without disturbing the other sleeper.
On the other hand, when we compare Tuft & Needle and Casper mattresses’ heat control capability, the former has it.
If you get sweaty at night, go for a Tuft & Needle mattress — its layers have ceramic cooling gel with graphite in the adaptive foam. These two components pull heat away from your body and encourage air circulation to keep you cool.
