What is the Zinus Memory Foam Mattress Made of?

The Zinus 10″ memory foam mattress is classified as a medium-comfort mattress, which can be expected to perfectly combine softness and firmness to achieve maximum comfort.

The gel material provides a cooler surface than other memory foam mattresses. Its layers include a 3-inch gel memory foam, which not only cools the mattress but also relieves pressure; there is also a 7-inch high-density support foam that will provide years of stability and durability.

Cover – Zinus starts with a very thin, relatively standard polyester cover. Because of the thinness of the cover, it should improve the breathability of the bed overall.

Comfort Layer – There is a layer of comfortable memory foam on the Green Tea mattress. The material reacts slowly to pressure, resulting in excellent body contour. This slow response provides good pressure relief, but the thin shell is a minimal barrier to a common memory foam issue – sleeping hot.

To solve this problem, Zinus infuses green tea and ActiveCharcoal into the foam to absorb moisture and neutralize smell.

The thickness of this layer will range from 1″ for the 6″ model to 3″ for the 12″ model.

Transition Layer – After the soft memory foam, a narrower 2-inch poly foam layer prevents the sleeper from sinking into the firm base of the mattress. This poly foam layer is not as firm as its lower layers, so it still allows for contouring but much less than the comfort layer.

Support Layer –Under the transition layer, the first 3.5-inch high-desnity foam begins to provide the important foundation support. The second layer forms the shape of the Zinus and supports the first layer. This is a standard and common use of HD poly foam for bed-in-a-box mattresses.

Zinus Green Tea Mattress Firmness

On the soft-to-firm scale, the Green Tea Mattress is medium-soft with a pure memory foam feel. This means that you will experience the slow melt into the bed’s surface.

If you often change your sleeping posture at night, changing your position will take extra effort and may be disturbing which could leave you restless.

It is worth noting, we noticed that the hardness of the bed varies with the seasons due to temperature. This bed is harder in the cold and softer in the heat.

Overall, we think the green tea mattress is very comfortable, however, it’s imperative the sleeper REALLY like memory foam if they decide to purchase a Zinus.

Testing the Zinus Green Tea Mattress

Understanding a mattress’s firmness is important, but it’s certainly not the only factor that affects how a mattress feels. So let’s also review the Zinus when it comes to Pressure Relief and Motion Transfer.

Pressure Relief and Motion Transfer

Sure, it’s not the most titillating concept around. But Pressure Relief — or a bed’s ability to relieve tension at sensitive areas such as the hips, lower back, and shoulders — is an important measure of a mattress’s feel. You want to know whether a mattress will ease pressure on relevant parts of your body so you sleep comfortably all night long.

Back – The pressure graph at this position almost shows blue on the entire Zinus. This is very common because a person’s weight is evenly distributed on his or her back. In this regard, the Zinus mattress keeps pace with the competitors.

Side – Moving onto my side, I only saw a little dark green in the shoulders and hips – key sensitivity areas. Because dark green is closer to blue (meaning no pressure) than yellow (light pressure) or red (higher pressure), strict side sleepers or back and side combo sleepers should not have a problem.

Stomach – When laying face down, there is mostly a blue map, however, this is not the complete picture. While we do not see high pressure across contact points between mattress and the sleeper, it is also important to check the hip support. Without proper support, the misalignment of the spine can result in an uncomfortable back bowing and unpleasant pain in the morning. On the Zinus mattress, there is a substantial ‘hip sink’. As a result, the Zinus may not be the best choice for those who rely strictly on a stomach sleeping position.

How Does the Zinus Mattress Compare to Other Mattresses?

Anyone who’s considering the Zinus mattress has probably taken a peek at other major brands in the bed-in-a-box space, such as Nectar or Tuft & Needle. So let’s review how the Zinus stacks up against these other popular options.

Zinus vs Nectar Mattress Comparison

Like Zinus, Nectar is also a memory foam mattress.

Generally, the structure of Nectar is very similar to Zinus:

  • 3″ memory foam
  • transition layer
  • 6″ high-density poly foam

Both mattresses help dreamers go deep into the comfort layer, however, the Nectar has a leg up in motion isolation making it a better choice for couples.

The price range of Nectar ($399 – $899) is higher than Zinus ($209 – $410) which may make the Zinus more appealing to the cost-conscious buyer.

Zinus vs Tuft & Needle Comparison

Tuft & Needle is also a bed-in-a-box and an all-foam mattress, just like Zinus. T&N uses a proprietary alternative to memory foam, however, that allows for a cooler sleep and responds faster to pressure.

Therefore, T&N has a more firm profile overall than Zinus making it a better bed option for people who sleep on their back.

Tuft & Needle’s price range ($350 – $750) also skews higher than Zinus ($209 – $410).
