Who the Avocado Mattresses Is Best For

Knowing what to look for when choosing a mattress can save you a great deal of time and pain!

A few factors to look for include:

  • Your preferred sleeping position
  • Personal preferences
  • Physical ailments

Avocado is an excellent choice if you’re a stomach sleeper or if you suffer from chronic back pain. The multi-zoned system provides excellent support for your hips, shoulders, and lower back.

Firmer than most latex or memory foam beds, the Avocado Latex mattress promotes healthy spinal alignment.

Avocado mattresses are endorsed by the American Chiropractic Association.

If you’re a side-sleeper or weigh less than 130 lbs, Avocado mattresses may be a bit too firm. In this case, you may want to opt for an add-on pillow top for softer cushioning.

Avocado Mattress Lines

Avocado offers five mattress models — three of which come in standard adult sizes; the other two are designed for cribs.

Each mattress is hand-tufted with all-natural textiles. They’re not only durable but also free of toxic chemicals, making them safe for the entire family.

Avocado Latex

The Avocado Latex mattress is made without the use of springs. Meaning this model is made purely from organic and natural elements. The latex is GOLS-certified organic and layered with GOTS-certified wool and cotton.

Firmer than most latex or memory foam mattresses, this model offers sufficient support for stomach and back sleepers.

Avocado Green

Avocado’s flagship mattress is the hybrid Green model. Like the Latex, it’s built with GOTS and GOLS organic certified materials.

What makes it a hybrid are the pocketed steel springs, which allow for a bit more buoyancy. This makes it a better option for side-sleepers or those who prefer a medium-firm mattress.

To give the mattress surface a bit more cushioning, you have the option to add on a 2” organic latex and cotton pillowtop.

Avocado Vegan

The Vegan mattress is a hybrid as it combines organic certified textiles with upcycled steel coils. It offers medium-firm support, which is recommended for combo-sleepers.

What’s unique about the Vegan is that it’s wool-free, making it perfect for anyone after a PETA-approved product.

The built-in 2” pillowtop can be added on to provide a softer sleeping experience while maintaining healthy support.

Avocado Mattress Firmness

The firmness level of your mattress can make a huge difference in your comfort and back health.

There’s a right balance for each individual’s body. However, every person needs some degree of support to keep their spine properly aligned while sleeping.

Mattress materials play a key role in the level of support they provide. Let’s look at the firmness levels of the Avocado Latex mattress and both hybrid models.

The first thing I noticed about the Avocado Green Mattress was its firmness. As a back sleeper, I found the firmness level to be just right, providing excellent support for my hips, shoulders, and lower back. The mattress also had a mild natural scent for the first week, which I found to be quite pleasant.

What Do the Avocado Mattresses Feel Like?

Avocado Latex

The Latex model feels firm compared to most latex or memory foam mattresses. It doesn’t sink, and if you typically sleep on a soft mattress, the Latex model may take some getting used to.

However, after a short period of sleeping on the Avocado Latex mattress, you’ll come to appreciate the additional support. As it’s firmer, it bolsters the natural alignment of your hips, spine, and lower back. Which in turn minimizes aches and pains.

If you sleep primarily on your side or weigh under 130 lbs, this mattress might be too firm for you. This level of firmness is typically best for back and stomach sleepers.

Avocado Green

With the combination of up-cycled coils and organic materials, the Avocado Green offers pressure-relief, comfort, and support.

The 2-inch layer of GOTS certified wool under the cover regulates the mattress’s surface temperature. Additionally, the 5 zone system maximizes airflow, providing a cooling effect.

While medium-firm, this model is softer than the all-latex model. This makes it a comfortable option for a variety of sleeping preferences.

Avocado Vegan

The Avocado Vegan mattress is almost identical to the Green model. It offers medium-firm support while providing a cool and comfortable night’s sleep. Perfect for back, stomach, and side sleepers.

You may sleep better knowing that no animals were involved in the production of this mattress. Without the use of wool, this mattress is PETA-approved.

Avocado Mattress Construction and Specs

The main components that give the Avocado mattress its unique design are the GOLS and GOTS certified organic materials. They’re entirely free from toxic chemicals, including fire retardants and glues, making them both environmentally and family-friendly.

The outside layer covers the entire mattress with hand-tufted, GOTS certified organic cotton. It comes in a cream color, with green upholstered handles on the side. The mattress cover is non-removable.

Inside both of the hybrid models are up to 1,414 pocketed springs, arranged in a 5-zone system.

The Latex model consists of layered organic latex, separated into 3 zones. Between the zones are latex “waves” to give the mattress additional breathability.

In the Green model, the wool makes up the first 2-inch layer underneath the cover. This helps to regulate temperatures while acting as a natural fire barrier.

Avocado Mattress Performance

Each Avocado mattress is crafted from 100% certified organic materials with priority on comfort and health. It’s an excellent mattress choice for those who don’t want to compromise eco-conscious values for sleep quality.

With their pocketed coil system, the hybrid models help to alleviate pressure points. Alternatively, the firmer latex model offers plenty of spine-aligning support.

Each model integrates GOTS organic certified wool layers into its multi-zoned system to provide cooling benefits. The hand-tufted surfaces keep the textiles balanced and even, allowing you to sleep pleasantly through the night.

Sleeping Hot or Cold

A huge factor that affects sleep quality is a mattress’s ability to maintain comfortable temperatures.

Minimal body heat is retained in Avocado mattresses, due to their unique design. They have a 2-inch layer of organic wool directly under the cover, layered with organic Dunlop latex. The purpose of this is to regulate temperature.

In the hybrid models, the floating coil systems help circulate additional airflow to prevent overheating.

Motion Transfer

Both the hybrid and the latex mattresses have considerably low motion transfer.

As the latex mattress is built without springs, it naturally has the greatest absorption of movement. With both the hybrids, a small amount of movement can be detected, but the pockets surrounding each coil help keep this to a minimum.

Edge Support

All of Avocado’s mattresses are built with reinforced edges and provide plenty of edge support. The network of coils in the hybrid models particularly maintains even levels of support.

This feature is important to consider, especially when sharing a bed. With sufficient edge support, sleeping space is maximized as each person can fully extend to either side.

Durability

Our experts reviewed everything — from the upholstery to the hand-tufting. We found the Avocado Green to be assembled with care and quality.

It’s safe to assume that Avocado also has confidence in their mattress durability since it comes with a 25-year warranty.

Off-Gassing

Avocado mattresses are free of toxic chemicals; you won’t experience the same off-gassing as with most latex and memory foam mattresses. That being said, all new mattresses carry an initial scent.

The scent experienced with Avocado Green can be described as a mild “countryside” smell. This is attributed to the organic certified wool that’s used in its makeup. After a week of use, the scent is mostly dissipated.

All in all, the initial scent of the natural textiles in this mattress is a small tradeoff for an eco-friendly and non-toxic product.

Noise

Many coiled beds come with a disturbing creaky sound. One way to completely avoid this is by opting for the Latex model.

Avocado prevents noise in their hybrid models by cushioning each spring into a floating system. The upcycled coils are wrapped in organic cotton and layered between latex and wool. This way, any noise emitted by the springs is absorbed through the textiles.

Delivery, Warranty, and Returns

Avocado mattresses are made in the US, with free shipping to all states, including Hawaii and Alaska. Unfortunately, international shipping isn’t offered at this time.

When you purchase directly through Avocado, they offer a 1-year trial period.

Additionally, the mattress is covered by a 25-y

ear warranty. If there are any defects in the workmanship or material, Avocado will send you a replacement mattress.

Commonly Asked Questions

Do Avocado Mattresses Need a Box Spring?

No. Box springs can give your mattress too much bounce, taking away from the healthy support the mattress provides.

Is Avocado a Good Mattress?

In our opinion, Avocado is the best hybrid mattress on the market. They’re hand-detailed and built to last.

However, as everyone differs in their sleeping preferences, it’s helpful to compare other natural and organic mattress options.

How Long Do Avocado Mattresses Last?

Each mattress is backed by a 25-year warranty. Meaning Avocado builds their mattresses to withstand this time period. Should you experience any defects within this time, Avocado will provide an equivalent mattress replacement without charge.

Can You Flip an Avocado Mattress?

According to Avocado, you’ll never have to flip your mattress. The logo should always face up. You should rotate the mattress once per month for the first six months. This ensures even compression in the top internal layer of wool.
